The History
The Awakino Hotel originated in 1904 as a boarding house and tea house, strategically situated on the banks of the Awakino river to offer travellers a place to take a break and relax, especially during cattle drives. It served as a convenient stopover for people whose journeys were interrupted by floods or other delays.
In 1957, a bar was added to the hotel in response to the prohibition that was enforced in the Waikato region. The hotel was located just across the river from the Waikato territory, and the addition of the bar was intended to cater to the needs of the thirsty patrons.
Ever since its expansion, the Awakino Hotel has become a thriving centre of activity, hosting a wide range of events such as speed shears, hunting and fishing competitions, weddings, and even live music performances by local rock bands. The hotel also serves as a popular destination for parties and quiz nights in the area.
